It happened four hundred years ago in Radošine when the unfaithful woman Mária Poljaková unexpectedly left her husband – the strange man Macko Poljak – and ran away to Trnava. In a village that was then a town, this caused an unprecedented stir especially because a similar situation could happen in other households too! Therefore, the frightened mayor of Radošine sent Poljaková’s friend, the old maid Etela Vlasáková, to find the unfaithful woman in Trnava and bring her back to the village. This is an authentic letter from the Trnava city archive from the year 1548.
Vlasáková, in our play, sets off on a journey, but along the way, she not only gets lost but also travels through time. Thus, she wanders through years and centuries and suddenly encounters not only famous and interesting historical figures on her endless quest but also impoverished pilgrims, the first workers, and engages in passionate conversations with them (Doctor Ján Jessenius, Napoleon Bonaparte, Anton Bernolák, Ján Hollý, Ľudovít Štúr, Jozef Miloslav Hurban, Michal Hodža, Adela Ostrolúcka, Andrej Sládkovič, Marína, Anička Jurkovičová, Jonáš Záborský, Svetozár Hurban Vajanský, Mikoláš Aleš, a factory worker, P. O. Hviezdoslav, Jozef Murgaš, etc.).
She meets them not in their well-known historical forms. She speaks with them precisely when our great figures – and their kind – are searching, doubting, when they are ordinary, vulnerable people, which naturally brings about a range of unexpected, surprising, and especially comical situations in the production. A significant component of the play are the songs of Ján Melkovič (and other composers) performed by the present live music group, the singing and dancing ensemble RND.
The play How We Searched for Each Other, written by Stanislav Štepka based on an authentic letter from 1584, had its first premiere in 1983 at the Trnava theater directed by Juraj Nvota (it had its second premiere in RND in 2003). And it is exactly Juraj Nvota who is also directing the new, revised, and supplemented version of Štepka's poetic play.
And because the thoughts about our national path and the search for identity are still extremely relevant in our society, we decided to present the play in our theater – in a new, relevant authorial and directorial form.
The premieres were in RND on November 8 and 9, 2024.
