Slovak journalist Veronika Cosculluela invites us on an unusual journey behind the bars of Slovak prisons in her report book “Shrunken World” published by Absynt. Through the stories of prisoners, guards, a judge, and a doctor, we enter rooms that outsiders have no access to. It is a closed world, but it concerns many people - the Prison and Judicial Guard employs around eight thousand people, about ten thousand are incarcerated, four hundred of whom are released every month, not to mention the families whose lives are deeply affected by life behind bars. In the media, there is talk about prisoners mostly at Christmas or in connection with some scandal or escape. However, there are many questions we would like answers to: What does life look like for families who have a relative in prison? How do they cope in their environment - at work, in the city, in the village? What is life like for former prisoners in Slovakia? What chances do they have to reintegrate into society? Who do we lock behind bars, and who are the people that oversee them? Veronika Cosculluela seeks the answers in her book “Shrunken World.”

About the author:

Veronika Cosculluela is a Slovak journalist. She grew up in Podkonice near Banská Bystrica. She studied journalism in Bratislava and political sciences in Grenoble and Belgrade. For ten years, she primarily worked as a political reporter for various Slovak media, most recently at Plus 7 dní. Whenever possible, she was drawn to reporting instead of interviews with politicians. This is how she became involved with the theme of imprisonment at a time when there was a lot of discussion about the conditions of people in prisons during the COVID pandemic in Slovakia. She was interested in how the people who make up this closed system think about this topic. “Shrunken World” is her debut book.
