Stories of Love and Hate
The report book "Spúšť" from the Absynt publishing house examines the tragic events of October 12, 2022, that took place in front of the Tepláreň establishment and the broader context of the lives of LGBTI+ people in Slovakia. It was created based on interviews with people affected by these events in various ways.
We live together on one planet, in one city, passing by each other on the same streets. So why do some of us still have to feel like targets? And why did it have to end with gunshots and blood on the sidewalk in front of Tepláreň?
The report book by Marek Hudec titled "Spúšť" deals in detail and from various angles with the tragic events of October 12, 2022, in front of the popular Bratislava queer establishment, Tepláreň. It reconstructs the events of that fateful evening, examines the killer's motives, and also looks back at the thwarted young lives of Juraj and Matúš, as well as the story of the wounded Radka. Amid the effort to objectively capture the darkest day in modern Slovak queer history, the author's deeply personal and intimate experience of these tragic events also seeps into the text.
However, Marek Hudec also views the life of LGBTI+ people in the Slovak context in a broader context. He touches on these themes through the story of the first Slovak queer activist Imrich Matyáš from the interwar period, through the stories of people who had to undergo aversive therapy during totalitarian times in an attempt to "cure" them of homosexuality, and those who discovered their identity in the nineties, sometimes literally fighting for their lives. We learn about the history of Slovak Pride events, about the family referendum that marked a turning point in the perception of LGBTI+ people in Slovakia, and the stories of current activists who still hold the rainbow flag high. Against the backdrop of these stories, we also perceive how Slovak society has changed and continues to change. And not always for the better.
The report book "Spúšť" was created based on interviews with over fifty people - loved ones of the victims, witnesses from the crime scene, queer people affected by violence in the months before and after the murder, and memorialists recalling events from the near or distant past. Marek Hudec tells us how difficult it is to sometimes fight for the right to love in a hateful atmosphere, and how beautiful it can be when love ultimately prevails.
Marek Hudec's book "Spúšť" with the subtitle "Stories of Love and Hate" is published in the “Cursed Reporters” series.
