In the early years of its existence, the Slovak state appeared as an oasis of peace and abundance in a world marked by wartime devastation. The construction of sidewalks and sewage systems, bustling construction sites, cheerful parades, and full stands celebrating God and the nation. This idyllic image, however, can only stand if we forget about the thousands of murdered Jews, the Roma pushed to the outskirts of towns and villages, and the Czechs, Hungarians, and Rusyns degraded to second-class citizens. If we overlook the Aryanizations, violence, and above all, the systematic effort to transform the previously multicultural country into a Slovak Christian monolith modeled after Hitler's Germany.

We invite you to the Book Galaxy with historian Hana Kubátová, who explores how the formation of the nation-state during World War II was connected to collective betrayal and genocide. She shows that the Holocaust was not just an "imported" tragedy imposed on Slovakia by Nazi Germany, but a process in which Slovaks themselves participated – political and religious elites, local officials, and ordinary citizens. This book disrupts the comfortable myth of Slovakia as a victim of Nazi dictate and poses the question of how a country that presented itself as Christian and national could become an active participant in the Holocaust.

Kubátová provides an answer supported by a wealth of evidence that indicates that the Holocaust was not only driven by the decisions of the powerful. It was facilitated by everyday expressions of loyalty, compromise, and greed, even in the most remote corners of the country, where foxes say goodnight. The historical analysis of events intertwines with a warning about the power of nationalist ideologies that transcend borders – both geographical and temporal.
