The book by Anton Heretik, titled "Magic as a Source of Evil," continues his series on marginal psychology (Evil, Humor, Dreams, Narcissism, Good, Death). The author guides the reader through the history of magic and describes its formative influence on world religions and ideologies. He focuses on psychological variables – magical thinking and behavior in both normal and pathological contexts. The influence of magical thinking is evident in the current prevalence of irrationality, hoaxes, and conspiracy theories. Heretik – a forensic psychologist – also presents ten unique case studies from his expert practice. He describes the magical motivational background in cases of cannibalism, terrorism, unrequited love, murders committed by foreigners, and criminal acts related to religious sects. He sees hope for managing irrationality and dangerous magical thinking in science, education, and the arts.

Anton Heretik is a Slovak psychologist and court expert who specializes in clinical and forensic psychology. He studied psychology at the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University in Bratislava. After his studies, he worked as a psychologist at the Psychiatric Clinic of the University Hospital in Bratislava. He has published dozens of scientific studies in the fields of psychopathology, psychotherapy, and psychodiagnostics. As a court expert in psychology, he focuses mainly on assessing perpetrators of serious violent crimes. He currently serves as a professor of clinical and forensic psychology.
