What can a man do when his marriage has just ended? When his best friends constantly nag him to give a new relationship a chance? When every blind date set up for him ends in awkward failure? Meanwhile, he keeps hearing voices in his head – sometimes forced to listen to critical remarks from his ex-wife, sometimes receiving life advice from his idol, Humphrey Bogart? And what happens if a romantic moment does arise, but it’s with the best friend’s best wife? What does Rick say at the end of Casablanca? Woody Allen's comedy premiered in February 1969 at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York. It ran until March 1970, during which it was performed a total of 453 times. For Woody Allen, the play brought success not only as a writer: in the role of the neurotic, recently divorced film critic, he proved for the first time that he could carry a production on his own as an actor. There was no question that he got the lead role in the 1972 film adaptation, along with Diane Keaton, Tony Roberts, and Jerry Lacy, who played Humphrey Bogart's character. And if that were not enough: Woody Allen and Diane Keaton's marriage also began with this story. After all, there's always the possibility of magic in the theater.
