Ivan Stodola - Karol Rédli: Čaj u pána senátora

The classic Slovak satirical comedy Tea with Mr. Senator was created a century ago during the times of young democracy. Ivan Stodola took aim at all those who felt "called" to enter politics, yet failed both intellectually and morally. In the adaptation by director Karol Rédli, we suddenly feel that we have not changed much in these 100 years.

In the 1920s, when the play was written, it depicted the political and social practices of politicians from the burgeoning democracy in the independent history of the First Czechoslovak Republic. At that time, many ordinary people could enter politics, including those with questionable societal conduct, with extreme opinions, with a clear career direction, with a manipulable political voice, those who hardly fought for the people, or "protectors" of the Slovak nation. They all pretended to be solidarity people, declared that they were one family, one hundred percent democrats, and that they would not let anyone take our Slovakia. Czechoslovakia is now in the past, and we live in an independent Slovak Republic. As the play is being created, it's the year 2024, and we are supposedly different... Or are we?
