Ivan Stodola - Karol Rédli: Čaj u pána senátora

A classic Slovak satirical comedy Tea with Mr. Senator was created a century ago during the times of young democracy. Ivan Stodola took "to task" all those who felt "called" to enter politics yet failed intellectually and morally. In the adaptation by director Karol Rédli, we suddenly have the feeling that we have not changed that much in these 100 years.

In the 1920s, when the play was written, it depicted the political and social practices of politicians from the emerging democracy in the independent history of the first Czechoslovak Republic. At that time, many ordinary people could enter politics, including individuals with dubious social conduct, extreme opinions, clear career ambitions, and influenceable political voices—those who hardly fought for the people or the "protectors" of the Slovak nation. They all seemed to be solidaristic people, claiming they were one family, 100% democrats, and that they wouldn't let anyone take our Slovakia away. Czechoslovakia is now a thing of the past, and we live in the independent Slovak Republic. In the time of the production's creation, the year is 2024, and we are, after all, different... Or are we?
