Grass Grows in the Fields
Based on the novel by Pál Száz
In Pál Száz’s phytolegendarium, ethnography blends with prose, using a symbolic-allegorical language provided by plants. This is a rarity in the history of Hungarian literature, as Száz’s herbal book is a work of fiction written in a dialect with phonetic notation. It speaks of herbs and human destinies, and the author seeks to intertwine respect for plants with poetry in the language of the Matyusland dialect. It draws from folk apocryphal stories based on the Bible, where plants have played an important role. The structure of the volume is also based on the order of holidays and the associated sacred contents.
In the production by the Csavar Theatre, the audience can gain a unique insight into the herbal book. Through the story of a man and a woman and the focus on their relationship, actors Tamás Gál and Szilvia Kiss narrate about historical times and times before history. The bouquet of Matyusland parables spans from the expulsion from paradise to the change of regime.
“All sorrow is foolishness, for everything fades away in this world, except life. Not even death sets a limit on it, which does for everything else. Therefore, love life, whatever it is, for it is the greatest treasure! Open the little box of your heart, there can be no harm in that.”
