Carnival is one of the most joyous times of the year – it symbolizes the end of winter, the arrival of spring, joy, and good food. In Hlohovec, we do not miss this tradition and annually organize the Carnival Parade, which transforms our streets into a colorful display of masks, folklore, and dance.
If you experienced carnival as a child, you know that it is not an ordinary event. It is an occasion that connects generations and customs that have been passed down in our region for centuries.
cheerful parade
original and handmade masks
folk ensembles and musicians
humorous performances full of jokes and satire
stops at well-known locations in the city
and of course the burial of the bass – a symbolic end to the carnival
The parade concludes at the fountain in front of the Wine Fly establishment, where participants can enjoy a traditional slaughter and an atmosphere like something out of folk customs. These moments are what make the Hlohovec Carnival Parade special.
Carnival has deep roots in Slovakia. It is the period from the Epiphany until Ash Wednesday, traditionally filled with carnivals, slaughter, dances, and feasts. Masks often had symbolic meanings – featuring animals, young men, old men, and fairy tale creatures, each carrying a certain message. The parade ended with the burial of the bass, which symbolized the beginning of Lent.
Although times change, this tradition endures, and in Hlohovec, it still has a strong presence.
You will enjoy the Carnival Parade best if you wear a mask. Whether you make your own or come as a spectator, the atmosphere will draw you in. Masks are welcome not only for children but also for adults – the more originality, the better!
We will meet on February 7, 2026, at 2:00 PM traditionally at Hotel Jeleň and will gradually walk through the city.
