The Producers takes place in 1959 in New York City on Broadway. Max Bialystock, once a renowned producer but now ignored by everyone, teams up with his accountant Leopold Bloom to come up with a brilliant idea. They discover that a flop would earn them much more than a hit. The secret lies in getting more money from investors than they actually need, and splitting the rest.

The musical is inspired by the famous film of the same name from 1968, crafted by parody master Mel Brooks. The Producers premiered on Broadway in 2001 and won 12 Tony Awards (out of a total of 14) for Best Music, Book, Direction, Choreography, and other categories.
